The Architect

Upon graduating from Upper Canada College in 1954, Andrew Gaede completed his undergraduate studies at the School of Architecture in the University of Toronto and continued his Post Graduate work at the University of Florence where he obtained his Doctorate of Architecture in 1971.  He is both a member of OAA and RAIC.  Practicing with Pier Luigi Nervi in Rome and partnering with Pietro Porcinnai in Florence in the mid-sixties to early seventies, his works include both public projects and private estates such as the Papal Audience Hall in the Vatican City, Banca Nzaionale di Lavoro in Venice and the Libyan Royal Palace in Tripoli as well as private estates for wealthy European Families such as the Manoelli Residence in Poggio Ugolino, the Castelli Residence in Siena, the Benelli Residence in Florence, Arnoldo Mondadori Residence in Cap Ferret and the Schwatz Residence in Locarno, Switzerland.  His Canadian projects include the Board of Trade Country Club in Woodbridge, York Downs Country Club in Unionville, the National Research Council in Ottawa and the York University Master Plan and Athletic Building.

The Features

The Main Lodge was originally designed by Andrew Gaede as a Family Retreat for Jesse Villiam Stensson, the founder of Sheridan Nursery and built in 1972.  It stands on top of a hill overlooking the Private Lake and is designed to blend naturally in to the surroundings.  The building encompasses approximately 3,000 sq. ft. with special features such as BC Fir glue laminated beams and columns; Cedar Shake Roof; 2,200 sq. ft of Granite Wall; 600 sq. feet of Granite Floors, Insulated Plate Glass Windows and Skylights; Monitors; Cedar Ceilings throughout with exterior Cedar Siding; a 600 sq. ft Cedar Deck Terrace using 4 inch structural BC cedar; 2 Floor-to-Ceiling Fireplaces with Granite Chimneys; 400 Amp Service with a 260 foot Drilled Well.

The Private Lake is approximately 25 acres with scenic rocky shores for excellent fishing and family fun and enjoyment in pristine unpolluted water.  The Semi-Private Raft Lake is approximately 130 acres and shared with 3 neighbours with substantial homes.  The shoreline for this property is approximately 3,000 feet.

There are 5 km of private wooded trails for hiking or horse-backing riding.

The entrance forks out to a secondary parcel that comprises an Original Pioneer Barn c. 1870 (~80’ x 30’), an Original Pioneer Log Cabin (12’ x 15’), Two other Log Cabins, a Log Ice House and a 5-Bedroom Farm House c 1930’s (~1,200 sq.ft.).  The Farm House was restored in 1968 with a new roof in 1999 and a new 300 foot Drilled Well and Pump.  This is currently rented out at $5,400 p.a.

The Bonus

The Acreage comprises of mixed deciduous and evergreen managed forest which provide for a 75% reduction in taxes.  Property Tax for 2000 was $2,814.50.

There is a Plantation of 10,000 33 year-old Red Pine.  The timber harvest derives some $40,000.00 every 10 years with the last harvest in 1996.
