McGregor's Compound in Terra Cotta
c1880's
14249 Tenth Line, Halton Hills
1 Hour from Toronto
Set in truly magical 49 rolling and hilly acres with two large bodies of water (a pond fed by Silver Springs and the south end of Roger's Lake), the compound is two minutes from the Terra Cotta Conservation's (408 acres - part of the Niagara Escarpment) (it's neighbour) and five minutes from the Terra Cotta Inn - the focal point of the "High Tea" crowd as well as many artists who choose to live in the area. Halton Hills is the southwest neighbour of Caledon.
The compound is also part of the original Roger's Homestead, and comprises of the Main House (Built in the sixties by Brigadier Wallace), a Century Stone House (used by his gatekeeper), a barn with stone foundation wall (c 1890's), 4 Log Cabins (part of a Fly Fishing Camp operated at this site) and a two-car garage.
The Main House |

Queen Elizabeth II is reputed to have stayed with the Brigadier for 10 days during her 1972 Visit. My thoughts and first impression of the home harken back to the more British influence accommodations of their military officers in the 60's in Hong Kong - stately in size, but simple in decor and finishing. All-in-all the layout is practical and Having said that, the study that overlooks the pond through a large window is most pleasant with the wood panelling and stone fireplace. All bedrooms have their own ensuite. Total space is approximately 5,360 sq. ft.. |
